Question:

DIRECTIONS: Read each sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. Mark the part with the error as your answer. If there is no error, mark 'No Error' as your answer. (Ignore the errors of punctuation, if any).

My servant said (a)/ that she went to (b)/ the market (c)/ before coming home. (d)/ No error

Options:
A)

My servant said

B)

that she went to

C)

the market

D)

before coming home.

E)

No error

Solution:

Answer: Option (b)

When you are describing an action with reference to a time frame - Simple Past (in this case "went") is used only when you started an action in the past which is continuing into the present. Therefore in this case "had gone" is correct

The correct sentence would read, 'My servant said that she had gone to the market before coming home.'
