19.5 years is more than 2 years isn't it

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following question, two statements numbered I and II are given, on solving them, we get quantities I and II respectively. Compare both the quantities and choose the correct option.

Quantity I-The average age of 40 students of a class is 18 years. When 20 new students are admitted to the same class, the average age of the students of the class is increased by 6 months. The average age of newly admitted students is:

Quantity II-The average age of a husband and wife, who were married 7 years ago, was 25 years at the time of their marriage, Now, the average age of the family, including husband, wife and a child, born during the interval, is 22 years. What is the present age of the child?

Options:
A) Quantity I > Quantity II
B) Quantity I < Quantity II
C) Quantity I ≥ Quantity II
D) Quantity I ≤ Quantity II
E) Quantity I = Quantity II or the relation can’t be determined
Solution:
Ans: (b)

From Quantity I,

Total age of 40 students = 40 × 18 = 720 years.

Total age of 60 students after new came = 60 × 18.5 years = 1110 years.

Total age of 20 new students = 1110 - 720 = 390 years.

Average age of 20 students = \(\cfrac{390}{20}\) = 19.5 years.

From Quantity II,

Total age 7 years ago = 25 × 2

= 50 years

Total age today = 50 + 7 × 2

= 50 + 14

= 64 years

Total age after child is born= 64 + x years

Average =  \(\frac{64+X}{3}\) = 22

= 64 + x = 66

∴ x = 2 years
