x less than or equal to y

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following questions two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations and indicate the correct answer.

I. x2 + x – 12 = 0

II. y2 - 5y + 6 = 0

Options:
A) if x > y
B) if x ≥ y
C) if x < y
D) if x ≤ y
E) if x = y or the relationship cannot be established
Solution:

I.  x2 + x – 12 = 0

⇒ x2 + 4x - 3x – 12 = O

⇒ x (x + 4) - 3 (x + 4) = 0

⇒ (x - 3) (x + 4) = 0

⇒ x = 3 or – 4

II. y2 - 5y + 6 = 0

⇒ y2 – 3y -  2y + 6 = 0

⇒ y (y - 3) – 2 (y -3 ) = O

⇒ (y - 2) (y - 3) = 0

⇒ y = 2 or 3

Here three conditions are: x>y,x=y and x<y..so we can not combine together all the three relations...Hence, Relation can not be established....
