DIRECTIONS: Study the information given below and answer the questions that follow.


A building consists of men and women who spend their leisure time in painting, reading novel and writing poetry. 8 men, who form ten percent of the total number of men in the building, reading novel. The total number of women in the building is 62.5 percent of the total number of men in the building. Twenty four percent of the total number of women writing poetry. One-fifth of the total number of women painting. The ratio of the number of men painting to the number of women doing the same is 13 : 2 respectively.
What is the respective ratio of the number of men reading novel to the number of women doing the same?
Options:
A) 8 : 11
B) 5 : 9
C) 2 : 7
D) 3 : 5
E) None of these.
Solution:

Ans: (c)

Total Number of men in the building = 80

 Number of women = \(\cfrac{80×62.5}{100}\)  = 50.

Women who writing poetry = \(\cfrac{50×24}{100}\)  = 12.

Women who painting = 50 × \(\cfrac{1}{5}\) = 10.

Men who painting = \(\cfrac{13}{2}\) × 10 = 65.

Women who reading novel = 50 – 10 – 12 = 28.

Required ratio = 8 : 28 = 2 : 7.
