Question:

DIRECTIONS: These questions are based on the following information.

A team of top six Basketball players is to be selected from a group of 10 players — A through J. The selection would be done based on the ranks of four parameters — height, strength, speed and accuracy. The persons with higher rank in each parameter are preferred. If one of the two players with the same rank in different parameters is to be selected, then the order of priority would be speed, accuracy, strength and height respectively. No person got the same rank in two parameters. Following is the information known about their rankings.

(i)      D and H got worst ranks than B in any parameter and the best rank of H is 6.

(ii)     C is the only person who got the first rank as well as the last rank. B, E and J are the only persons who got neither the first rank nor the last rank.

(iii)    In strength F got a better rank than J, who in turn got better rank than G. In speed, F got a better rank than J, who got better rank than I, who got better rank than E.

(iv)    G did not get consecutive ranks with H or D in any parameter.

(v)     In height, C, F and G got the third, the fourth and the seventh ranks respectively.

(vi)    In strength, B, A and D got the third, the fifth and the tenth ranks respectively.

(vii)   In speed, A and B got the second and the sixth ranks respectively.

(viii)  In accuracy C, G, I and A got the second, the fourth, the eighth and the ninth ranks respectively.
If E got the 8th rank in height, then who got the 3rd rank in accuracy?
Options:
A) J
B) G
C) E
D) B
Solution:

If E’s rank is 8th in height, then J’s rank will be 6th in height and 3rd in accuracy.

From (v), (vi), (vii) and (viii) we get the following table.

Rank

Height

Strength

Speed

Now from (ii) C must get 1st  and 10th  ranks, but in strength D got 10th rank, thus C got 1st  rank in strength and 10th  rank in speed.

From (ii), A, D, F, C, H and I must get exactly one rank between 1st  and 10th  in any parameter. A can get either 1st  or 10th rank only in height and I can not get 1st  rank in speed, thus A and I can get 1st  or 10th  ranks in height in any order.

As the best rank of H is 6th .

∴       H cannot get the first ranker.

∴       H should get the last rank in accuracy, where as F got the first rank in the same parameter.

 From (iii), in speed F got better rank then J, I & E and also B got a better rank than D & H and the available ranks are 3rd , 4th ,  5th , 7th ,  8th  and 9th  As B got the 6th  rank, D and H can get the 7th  or the 8th  or the 9th . F, J, I got 3rd , 4th  and 5th  ranks respectively and E may get 8th / 9th ranks.

B got better rank than D and H in. any parameters. As B cannot get 3rd or 6th rank in accuracy. He got the 5th  rank in accuracy.

In height; the remaining ranks are 2nd , 5th , 6th , 8th  and 9th . B must get better rank than D and thus it cannot get 8th  or 9th  ranks.

∴       B must get the second rank..

As D and H did not get adjacent ranks with 0, in height the ranks of D and H would be the 5th  and the 9th  respectively.

∴       E and J got the 6th  and the 8th  rank in any order.

As, H must get the 6th  rank, that must be in strength.

∴       G must get the 8th  rank in strength.

∴       F must get the second rank in strength.

The table will be as follows:
