option E should contain (a) and (c) .

Question:

DIRECTIONS: Select the phrase/connector from the given three options which can be used to form a single sentence from the two sentences given below, implying the same meaning as expressed in the statement sentences.

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has captured a stunning image of Saturn. It showed the whole northern region of the ringed planet bathed in sunlight.

(a)  NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has …..

(b)  It showed the whole …..

(c)  A stunning image of Saturn...

Options:
A) Only (a)
B) Only (b)
C) Only (c)
D) (a) and (c)
E) (b) and (c)
Solution:
Answer: Option (d) => (a) and (c) can begin the sentence. (b) can not help to begin the sentence as it begins with ‘it’ referring to something told in the previous sentence and there is no previous sentence before it. Even when we consider it as a provisional subject and the real subject is introduced after the verb, the sentence looks like: It showed the whole northern region..’ and this cannot include all the Information contained in the two sentences. The right answer is choice (d). The sentences may read as; (a) NASA’s Cassini spacecraft which has captured a stunning image of Saturn, showed the whole northern region of the ringed planet bathed in sunlight. (or) (C) A stunning image of Saturn showing the whole northern region of the ringed planet bathed in sunlight has been captured by NASAs Cassini spacecraft.

The right answer is option (d).
