Question:

DIRECTIONS: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below.

In class of 84 students the boys and girls are in the ratio 5 : 7 respectively. Among the girls 7 can speak Hindi and English. 50 per cent of total students can speak only Hindi. The ratio between the number of students speaking only Hindi and only English is 21: 16 respectively. The ratio between the number of boys and girls speaking English only is 3 : 5. The number of boys is 75% of the number of girls is speaking only hindi.

What is the ratio between the number of boys and girls respectively who speak only English?

Options:
A) 3 : 5
B) 3 : 7
C) 5 : 8
D) 5 : 7
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (a) Number of boys in the class = \(\cfrac{5}{12}\times 84 = 35 \)

Number of girls in the class = \(\cfrac{7}{12}\times 84 = 49 \)

Number of girls speaking Hindi and English both = 7

50% i.e., 42 students speak Hindi alone Number of students who speak English only = 32, as the ratio of students speaking Hindi and English only = 21: 16

Number of girls who speak English only = 20 Number of boys who speak English only = 12 Number of girls who speak Hindi only = 22 Number of boys who speak both languages

= 35 - 32 = 3.
