0.9x = 360 is a wrong assumption as in that case the increment will be 9% instead.
1.1x = 360 is a correct assumption.

If the total number of graduates in 2006 was 360,000 which is a 10 percent decrease from 1999, then the difference in the number of graduates who joined the Finance sector in 1999 and 2006 is (in 000):
Options:
A) 162
B) 102
C) 60
D) 86
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (b)

Let the number of graduates in 1999 = x

∴ 0.9x = 360 ⇒ x = 400

            1979    1986

Total     400      360

Finance  60       162

Hence  162 – 60 = 102

Alternative:

Let the no of graduates in 1999 = x

x-(x*10%)=36000

9x=360000

x=40000

                 1999            2006

Total        40,000          36,000

Finance    60,000       1,62,000

Hence Difference =    1,62,000 - 60,000

                          =      102000

                          =      102 (in 000)
