The total production of 10 tea estates is 550 tonnes. By opening two new tea estates, the average increases  by 3 tonnes. The average production of these two new tea estates (in tonnes) is:

A) 70
B) 64
C) 67
D) 73
E) 78
Solution:

Ans: (d) old average = \(\cfrac{550}{10}\) = 55

New average = 55 + 3 = 58

Let the average of two new estates = x, then

12 × 58 = 550 + 2x

⇒ 696 = 550 + 2x ⇒ x = 73.
