pathetic test

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In each question below, three statements are given followed by two conclusions numbered I and II. You have to take the given statements to be true even if they seem to be at variance with commonly known facts. Read all the conclusions and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follow(s) from the given statements, disregarding the commonly known facts.

Statements:

All bullets are guns.

No bullet is pen.

Some pens are swords.

Conclusions:

I. No pen is a gun.

II. Some swords being bullets is a possibility.

Options:
A)

If either conclusion I or II follows.

B)

If only conclusion I follows.

C)

If neither conclusion I nor II follows.

D)

If both conclusions I and II follow.

E)

If only conclusion II follows.

Solution:

Ans: (e)

The given statements can be represented in the following basic diagram:

Conclusion I, negative follows.

As the negative conclusion follows. Let us try to negate it by an alternate diagram. The negation of ‘No pen is a gun’ is ‘Some pens are guns’.

From the above diagram,

Conclusion I. is negated, hence does not follow. The possible diagram for conclusion II is,

Hence, conclusion II follows.

∴ Only II follows.
