Question:
DIRECTIONS: In each of the following questions, a question is followed by information given in two statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statements (s) is necessary to answer the question?

How many pages are there in the library, which is made up of books and magazines only?

(A) Books, on an average, contain 300 pages each while magazines which are half the number, have pages one third of a book.

(B) There are as many magazines as there are pages in 200 magazines.

Options:
A) If the question can be answered by using statement I alone but not by using statement II alone
B) If the question can be answered by using statement II alone but not by using statement I alone
C) If the question can be answered by using either of the statements alone
D) If the question can be answered by using both the statements together but not by either of the statements alone
E) If the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together
Solution:

Ans: (d)

Statement (A) The number of books be 2x and the number of magazines be x. Then 2x contains 300 pages each and x contains 100 pages each.

Statement (B): This statement alone cannot answer the question.

Combining statements (A) and (B): Now 200 magazines will have (200 × 100) pages = 20,000 pages. Thus there are 20,000 magazines. Combined there are 40,000 books and 20,000 magazines, the average number of pages in the books being 300 and that in a magazine being 100. Thus, total number of pages can be counted.
