DIRECTIONS: In the given question two equations numbered I and II are given. You have to solve both the equations.

I. x2 – 24x + 144 = 0


II. y2 – 26y + 169 = 0

Options:
A) x > y
B) x ≥ y
C) x < y
D) x ≤ y
E) x = y or the relationship cannot be established
Solution:

I. x2 – 24x + 144 = 0

⇒ x2  - 12x – 12x +144 = 0

⇒ x (x – 12) -12 (x – 12) = 0

⇒(x – 12) (x – 12)= 0

⇒  x = 12

II. y2 – 26y + 169 = 0

⇒ (y – 13)2 = 0

⇒ y – 13 = 0

⇒ y = 13

Clearly, x < y

Solution is correct:

I. x2 – 24x + 144 = 0
⇒ x2 - 12x – 12x +144 = 0
⇒ x (x – 12) -12 (x – 12) = 0
⇒(x – 12) (x – 12)= 0
⇒ x = 12
II. y2 – 26y + 169 = 0
⇒ (y – 13)2 = 0
⇒ y – 13 = 0
⇒ y = 13
Clearly, x < y
