a=30 and b=50 ,then only sum is 80,and also when b is 30 ,a would be 10,that is b was thrice a when b was in the age of a

Question:

Birbal says to Akbar, “I am thrice as old as you were when I was as old as you are”. If the sum of their present ages is 80 years, then how many years ago was Birbal twice as old as Akbar?

Options:
A)

12

B)

10

C)

16

D)

18

E)

Cannot be determined

Solution:

Ans: (c)

Given the sum of the ages of Birbal and Akbar = 80 years.

Let Akbar’s age be a years and Birbal’s age be b years.

Birbal was as old as Akbar is exactly b — a years ago.

At that time, Akbar’s age = a — (b — a) = 2a — b

Given that b = 3(2a — b)

⇒ 4b = 6a ⇒ b : a = 3:2

But given a + b = 80 ⇒ a = 32

B = 48

K years ago, let Birbal be twice as old as Akbar.

(32 — k)2 = 48 — k

⇒ k = 16
