Rise to the occasion/challenge means to show that you can deal with a difficult situation successfully. It also means to perform better than usual in response to a special situation or event.

Eg: (1) In the exam she rose to the occasion and wrote a brilliant essay.

       (2) When it comes to the finals, the team can rise to the occasion

        (3) John was able to rise to the occasion and make the conference a success.

         (4) It was a big challenge, but he rose to the occasion.

          (5) It's not easy to play your first match in front of a crowd that size but he certainly rose to the occasion.
