why -1 at the end (Question: 113736.0 )

Why is that -1 at the end..did not understand..can you please explain

Question:
In a city no persons have identical set of teeth and there is no person without a tooth. Also no person has more than 32 teeth. If we disregard the shape and size of tooth and consider only the positioning of the teeth, then find the maximum population of the city. (Assume no two persons have similar configuration regarding positioning of teeth)
Options:
A) 224 
B) 232
C) 232 + 1
D) 232 – 1
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (d)

Since we consider only the positioning of teeth

Therefore for the each position there are 2 consider (teeth or no teeth)

So for 32 position ⇒ 232

And there is no person without teeth

∴maximum population⇒ 232 – 1
