There is a third person mention in the question. Is it a typing error? or Extra data???

Question:
Karan and Kartik are two brothers. The ratio of the number of sons to the number of daughters of Karan equals that of Kartik. The number of daughters of Karan is equal to the number of sons of Kartik. The number of sons of Karan and Kartik are distinct. Find the minimum possible value of the total number of their children.
Options:
A) 4
B) 8
C) 9
D) 16
E) 18
Solution:

The number of sons and daughters of Karan and Kartik are tabulated below.

                 Karan    Kartik

Sons           k2x          kx

Daughters    kx           x

When x = 1, k = 2, we get the minimum value for the total number of children, which is 1 + 2 + 2 + 4 = 9.
