12 min> 8 hours .
how?

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following question, two statements numbered I and II are given, on solving them, we get quantities I and II respectively. Compare both the quantities and choose the correct option.

Quantity I-Pipe A can fill a cistern in 4 minutes and a leakage pipe B can empty the cistern in 6 minutes. The cistern is empty. Find after how many minutes, the cistern shall be full if A is opened first?

Quantity II- Two pipes A & B can separately fill a tank in 12 hours and 16 hours respectively while a third pipe C can empty it in 48 hours. In what time will the tank be full, if all the pipes are opened together?

Options:
A)

Quantity I > Quantity II

B)

Quantity I < Quantity II

C)

Quantity I ≥ Quantity II

D)

Quantity I ≤ Quantity II

E)

Quantity I = Quantity II or the relation can’t be determined

Solution:

From Quantity I-

Work done by (A + B) in 1 minute = \(\cfrac{1}{4}-\cfrac{1}{6}=\cfrac{1}{12}\) .

From Quantity II-

Let capacity of the tank be unity.

then rate of A=1/12
        rate of B=1/16
       rate of C= -1/48
So net rate will be = \((\frac{1}{12} + \frac {1}{16} - \frac{1}{48})\)
therefore, total time taken will be= \((\frac{1}{12} + \frac {1}{16} - \frac{1}{48})^{-1}\)  \(=8\) .
