I THINK OPTION UNSTEADY IS ALSO CORRECT

Question:
DIRECTIONS: Each of the questions given below has a sentence with one blank followed by six options. Pick the pair of words that is synonymous and will fill the blank appropriately.

The World Bank’s warning in its report that the Indian economy is more __________ than it looks, because of the mounting fiscal deficit and the manifest inability of Central and State governments to muster up the political will to tackle it.

(A) secure

(B) stable

(C) fragile

(D) unsteady

(E) balanced

(F) unstable

Options:
A) (A) and (B)
B) (B) and (C)
C) (D) and (E)
D) (C) and (F)
E) (B) and (E)
Solution:
Ans: (d) On reading the sentence it can be inferred that the sentence is about the World Bank’s warning in its report about the Indian economy which is in a particular state than what it looks like because of increasing fiscal deficit and the inability of Central and State governments to muster the political will to tackle it. Increasing fiscal deficit and inability to muster political will to tackle it suggests that the Indian economy is in a negative state. Hence choice (d) where (C) ‘Fragile’ meaning lacking stability and (F) ‘Unstable’ meaning not stable are synonymous and so is the correct option. The rest of the options are either synonymous but inapt or not synonymous at all and so can be eliminated.
