Question:

A lent Rs. 600 to B for 2 years and Rs. 150 to C for 4 years and received altogether from both Rs. 90 as simple interest. The rate of interest is:

Options:
A)

3%

B)

4%

C)

5%

D)

6%

E)

None of these

Solution:

Ans: (c)

600 for 2yr=1200 for 1 yr

150 for 4 yr=600 for 1yr

R =\(\cfrac{(90×100)}{(1800×1)}=\cfrac{(9000)}{(1800)}\)  =5%

Alternate method-

Let the rate of interest be r% per annum.

or, 12r + 6r = 90

r = 5%

90=600*2*r/100 +150*4*r/100
90=12r+6r
90=18r
r=90/18
r=5%

Its very simple as we know, altogether SI is Rs.90

so, I_1 + I_2 = 90

or, p*r*t/100 + p*r*t/100 =90

or, 600*r*2/100 + 150*r*4/100 = 90

r=5%
