DIRECTIONS: In the following questions, two equations numbered I and II are given. Solve both the equations and given your answer as

I. 20P2 - 31P + 12 = 0 

II. 30q2 – 49q + 20 = 0
Options:
A)

If p > q 

B) If p ≥ q
C) If p < q
D) If p ≤ q
E) If p = q or relationship cannot be established
Solution:
Ans: (d) 

I.

20P2 - 31P + 12 = 0 

20P2 - 15P - 16P + 12 = 0

5P(4P - 3) - 4(4P - 3) = 0

(5P - 4)(4P -3) = 0

If 5P - 4 = 0 then P = 4/5

If 4P – 3 = 0 then P = 3/4

II.

30q2 – 49q + 20 = 0

30q2 – 24q – 25q + 20 = 0

6q(5q - 4)  - 5(5q - 4) = 0

(5q - 4)(6q - 5) = 0

If 5q - 4 = 0 then q = 4/5

If 6q - 5 = 0 then q = 5/6

As, p = 4/5, p = 3/4 or q = 4/5,q=5/6

Hence p ≤ q
