The answer should be 1:4 as this satisfies the need of 28*1 + 38*4 = 180/5 i.e 36

Question:

A shopkeeper mixes two varieties of sugar costing Rs 28/kg and Rs 38/kg. In what ratio should he mix the two different varieties so that he can sell it at Rs 36/kg including a profit of 20%?

Options:
A) 1:4
B) 4:1
C) 3:2
D) 2:3
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (b) Given that the selling price of the sugar mixture = Rs. 36/kg including 20% profit

Let the cost price of sugar mixture = Rs. x/kg

According to the question,

x + 20% of x = 36

x = Rs. 30/kg

Now, we can calculate the ratio of mixing two varieties of sugar by alligation formula as:

\(\cfrac{n_1}{n_2}\) = \(\cfrac{(38 - 30)}{(30 - 28)} \ = \cfrac{8}{2}\) = 4 : 1
