incorrect answer

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In each of the following questions, a question is followed by information given in two statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statements (s) is necessary to answer the question?

Question:

If N is a four-digit number, then is N divisible by 99?

Statements:

I. The sum of the digits of N excluding the units digit is 20.

II. N is a palindrome with the sum of the units digits and the hundreds digits as 15.

Options:
A) If the question can be answered by using statement I alone but not by using statement II alone
B) If the question can be answered by using statement II alone but not by using statement I alone
C) If the question can be answered by using either of the statements alone
D) If the question can be answered by using both the statements together but not by either of the statements alone
E) If the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together
Solution:

If a number is divisible by 99, then it must be divisible by 9 as well as by 11.

From statement I, if we have the number as abcd, then a + b + c = 20, To be divisible by 9, in abcd, d should be 7 as sum of the digits should be 27.

But out of all the possibilities we have, none of them is divisible by 11. Hence we can say that, N is not divisible by 99.

From statement II, we have N as palindrome. Let N be xyyx. Given x + y = 15. The possible numbers are 7887, 8778, 6996 or 9669. But none of them is divisible by 9. Hence we can say that N is not divisible by 99.
