Why did we subtract 4 from the outer measurements?

Question:
The outer measurement of a closed wooden box of 2 cm. thick wood are 25 cm. x 20 cm. x 15 cm. Find the cost of the wood required to make the box if 1 cm³ of wood costs Rs 12.50?
Options:
A) 47,550
B) 32500
C) 33000
D) 33500
Solution:

Ans: (a)

Outer length = 25cm, Inner length = (25 – 4) = 21cm

Outer width = 20cm, Inner width = 20 – 4 = 16cm

Outer Height = 15cm, Inner height = 15 –4 = 11cm

External volume = 25 x 20 x 15 = 7500 cm3

Internal Volume = 21 x 16 x 11 = 3696

Volume of wood = 7500 – 3696 = 3804

Cost of wood required to make the box = 3804 x 12.50

= \(\unicode{x20B9} \) 47, 550
