the option is written as 'baggage' and not as 'barrage'.

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following passage, there are blanks which have been

numbered, and after the blank is given a word which could be the probable

answer. If it is the required word for the blank, then choose option (e) as your answer, if not, then, against each number four words are suggested, one of

which fits the blanks appropriately. Find out the appropriate word in each case and mark it as your answer.

The people of South Africa are learning to live in the _(a)_(lane). Their beleaguered power utility, Eskom, is unable to meet electricity _(b)_(costs) and in November reintroduced a tortuous schedule of rolling _(c)_(fallouts) known as "load-shedding". South Africans now check electricity reports that read like weather forecasts: "There is a medium probability of load-shedding today and tomorrow, with a higher probability on Thursday and Friday," said a recent Eskom tweet. Newspapers print survival tips and "load-shedder recipes" for food you can prepare without electricity. And there are bleak jokes aplenty. The power cuts are _(d)_(hurting) an already stagnant economy, estimated to have _(e)_(persisted) by just 1.4% in 2014. Both big industries and small businesses are feeling the pinch. Meanwhile Eskom has warned that the blackouts could _(f)_(rely) on for months, perhaps even years, as it struggles with a maintenance _(g)_(distribution) and a _(h)_(staff) of technical problems at its aging power stations. There are _(i)_(pretexts) in bringing new capacity online, particularly at Medupi, a heralded new coal-fired power plant whose completion has been endlessly _(j)_(funded).

Mark the correct option for blank _(h)_.
Options:
A) group
B) herd
C) baggage
D) convoy
E) Given option is correct
Solution:

Ans: (c)baggage

A collective noun will be followed by a collection of humans, animals or things. For example, a group of students, a herd of elephants, a convoy of cars, etc. However the word (c) "barrage” is usually followed by negative words for example, a barrage of criticism, a barrage of insults, a barrage of questions, etc. In the context, however, in which barrage is used, there is a mention of technical problems. So it’s a barrage of technical problems and therefore (c) barrage” is the appropriate word for the blank. Other words are inapt.
