Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following question, two statements numbered I and II are given, on solving them, we get quantities I and II respectively. Compare both the quantities and choose the correct option.

Quantity I- A train covers a certain distance in 50 minutes, if it runs at a speed of 48 km/hr on an average. The speed at which the train must run so that time of journey becomes 40 minutes?

Quantity II- Ramesh can row a certain distance down stream in 6 hours and return the same distance in 9 hours. If the stream flows at the rate of 3 km/h. The speed of Ramesh in still water is:

Options:
A)

Quantity I > Quantity II

B)

Quantity I < Quantity II

C)

Quantity I ≥ Quantity II

D)

Quantity I ≤ Quantity II

E)

Quantity I = Quantity II or the relation can’t be determined

Solution:

From Quantity I-

From Quantity II-

Direction of Flow of water

\(\mapsto\)

A|------x--------|B

According to questions:

su=x/9=sRamesh-sStream=sR-3

x=9sR-27_____(1)

and sD=x/6=sR+3

x=6sR+18______(2)

From eq. (1) and (2)

9sR-27=6sR+18

3sR=27+18

sR=45/3

=15Kmph
