Question:
A vessel contains a mixture of milk and water in the respective ratio of 5 : 3. 40 liters of mixture was taken out and replaced with the same quantity of milk consequently the resultant ratio between the quantities of milk and water in the mixture became 2 : 1. If 15 liters of this mixture is again taken out from the vessel, what is the resultant quantity of water in the mixture(in liters)?
Options:
A) 100
B) 105
C) 110
D) 115
E) None of these
Solution:

Let the initial quantity of milk and water in the vessel be 5x and 3x respectively.

In 40 liters of mixture,

milk = 5 ×40/8 = 25 liters

Water = 3 × 40/8 = 15 liters

⇒ \(\cfrac{5x-25+40}{3x-15}\) = 2/1

i.e., 5 x + 15 = 6x – 30

⇒x = 45 liters

Quantity of water = (3 × 45) – 15 = 120

Quantity of water in 15 liters of mixture = 1/3 × 15 = 5 liters

Required quantity of water = 120 – 5 = 115 liters.
