Question:

A train having 10 wagons each of length 30 m stops along a platform of the same length. Initially, the train starts moving at the speed of 3.6 km/hr near the platform. The boy who enters at the end of the platform notices the train moving, runs at a speed of 36 km/hr. Once he reaches the other end of the platform, he boards the running train. In which no. of the wagon from the start has boy entered?

Options:
A) 5
B) 6
C) 2
D) 8
E) 4
Solution:

Ans: (c) Length of the train = Length of the platform = 10 × 30 = 300 m

⇒ Distance travelled by boy when he runs from one end to another end of the platform = 300 m

⇒ Time taken by boy to run from one end to other end = Distance/Speed

= 300/10 = 30s[∵ 36 km/hr= 10 m/s]

⇒ Distance travelled by the train in 30 s = Speed × time

= 1 × 30 = 30 m[∵ 3.6 km/hr= 1 m/s]

⇒ He boards at a distance of 30 m from the first wagon.

⇒ Number of wagon before the wagon in which he entered = 30/30 = 1

[Number of wagon = Total length/Length of each wagon]

∴ He boards in the 2nd wagon.
