water quantity is asked, not ratio of milk water

Question:
A man mixes 5 kiloliters of milk at Rs.600 per kiloliter with 6 kiloliters of milk at Rs.540 per kiloliter. How many kiloliters of water should be added to make the average value of the mixture Rs.480 per kiloliter?
Options:
A) 3
B) 13
C) 2
D) 11
E) None of these
Solution:
Ans: (c) Cost of milk when two qualities are mixed

\(=\cfrac{5×600+6×540}{5+6}\ \ = Rs.\cfrac{6240}{11}\)  per kiloliter

Cost of water = Rs.0/kiloliter

So,

∴ Ratio of milk and water

\(= 480 : \cfrac{960}{11}\)

\(= 1 : \cfrac{2}{11} = 11 : 2\)

Which implies that 11 kilolitres of milk should be mixed with 2 kilolitres of water. Thus 2 kilolitres of water should be added.
