Question:

DIRECTIONS: In these questions, four statements followed by five conclusions A,B, C,D and E have been given. You have to take the given statements be true even if they seem to be at variance from the commonly known facts and then decide which of the given conclusions logically follows from the given statement disregarding commonly known facts.

Statements:

No word is a letter.

No letter is a sentence.

All paragraphs are sentences.

Some words are questions.

Options:
A) Some words are paragraphs
B) No question is a letter
C) No paragraph is a letter
D) All sentences being words is not a possibility
E) Some questions not being paragraphs is not a possibility
Solution:

Ans: (c) The given statements can be represented by using the following basic diagram.

Conclusion 1 is affirmative and does not follow.

Conclusion 2 is negative and follows. As negative conclusion follows let us try to negate it. Negation for conclusion 2 is ‘some questions are letters’. It can be represented by using the following alternative diagram.

Conclusion 3, negative and follows. As negative conclusion follows let us try to negate it. Negation for conclusion 3 is ‘some paragraphs are letters’ but it cannot be represented by using alternative diagram as’ No letter is a sentence’ hence conclusion 3 follows.
