c is exactly taller than two persons than how could he be taller than three persons

Question:

DIRECTIONS: Each of the questions below consists of a question and two statements numbered I and II given below it. you have to decide whether the data given in statements are sufficient to answer the question. Read both statements and choose the most appropriate option.

Among the six friends A, B, C, D, E and F who are of different heights, who is the tallest?

I. B is taller than D and C is taller than exactly two persons.

II. Only one person is taller than E, who is taller than F and A.

Options:
A)

If statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

B)

If statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

C)

If the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

D) If statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question.
E)

If statements I and II together are required to answer the question.

Solution:

Ans: (e) From statement I alone, B > D and C > 2 person.

The person who is the tallest can be B or one among the other three persons.

From statement II alone,

E – 2nd tallest

C > 2 persons

The person who is the tallest is among the other four persons.

By combining both the statements, as neither of D, C, E, F and A can be the tallest, B must be the tallest.

∴ Both the statements are required.
