in the solution we are left with milk and water in the ration of 5:3. which means (5/8)*80=50 ltrs is the quantity of milk with which we are left with. then why this quantity is treated as the initial quantity of the mixture.

Question:
A vessel of 80 liter is filled with milk and water. 70% of milk and 30% of water are taken out of the vessel. It is found that the vessel is empty by 55%. Find the initial quantity of milk and water.
Options:
A) 20 liters, 30 liters
B) 30 liters 50 liters
C) 40 liters, 40 liters
D) 50 liters, 30 liters
E) None of these
Solution:

Here the % values of milk and water that is taken from the vessel should be taken into consideration.

∴ Quantity of milk =

\(\cfrac{5}{5+3}\)  × 80

= 50 liters

and quantity of water = \(\cfrac{3}{5+3}\)  × 80

= 30 liters

55% is taking out means 45% is left. so 45% of 80L will be=36L(left). which mean 80-36=44L(has taken out).
Let X=Initial quantity of milk, Y=Initial quantity of milk.
here two equation will be formed 0.7x+0.3y=44 & x+y=80.
After solving these you will get X=50, Y=30.

Let the initial quantity of milk be x litres.
Therefore, initial quantity of water = (80 - x) litres.
According to the question, 70% of x + 30% of (80 - x) = 55% of 80
or, 70x + 2400 - 30x = 4400
or, 40x = 2000
x = 50 litres.
Initial quantity of water = (80 - 50) = 30 litres,
