PLEASE EXPLAIN QUANTITY 2 IN DETAIL

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following question, two statements numbered I and II are given, on solving them, we get quantities I and II respectively. Compare both the quantities and choose the correct option.

Quantity I-If goods were purchased for Rs. 900, one-third of them were sold at a profit of 20%, at what profit percent should the remaining be sold to obtain a profit percent of 25%?

Quantity II- The price of rice increases by 20% and hence the expenditure of a family increases by 10%. Find out by what percent the consumption has been decreased?

Options:
A) Quantity I > Quantity II
B) Quantity I < Quantity II
C) Quantity I ≥ Quantity II
D) Quantity I ≤ Quantity II
E) Quantity I = Quantity II or the relation can’t be determined
Solution:
Ans: (a)

From Quantity I,

Total profit required = 25% of 900 = Rs. 225

Cost of one-third goods = 1/3 of 900 = Rs.300

Profit on one-third goods = 20% of 300 = Rs. 60

Remaining profit = 225 – 60 = Rs. 165

Profit % = \(\left ( \cfrac {165}{600} \right )\) x 100% = 27.5%

From Quantity II,

+ 20 - x - \(\cfrac{20x}{100}\) = 10

20 - 10 = x + \(\cfrac{x}{5}\)

10 = \(\cfrac{6x}{5}\)

\(\cfrac{50}{6}\) = x

8\(\cfrac{1}{3}\) = x

x = 8\(\cfrac{1}{3}\) %

The price of rice increases by +20%
expenditure of family increase by 10%
consumption has been decreased by x%
so, let a=+20% and b=-x%
Apply formula,
net change in % =a+b+ab/100

10 = 20-x-20x/100

x= 8 and 1/3 %
