Please elaborate

Question:

For what value of m, the system of equations mx + 2y =2 and 3x + y = 1 will be coincident?

Options:
A) 2
B) 3
C) 5
D) 6
Solution:

Two linear equations will coincide if there are infinite number of solutions,

i.e. \(\cfrac{a1}{a2}=\cfrac{b1}{b2}=\cfrac{c1}{c2}\)

for  a1 x +b1 y = c1

and a2x +b2y = c2

∴ \(\cfrac{m}{3}=\cfrac{2}{1}=\cfrac{2}{1}\)

⇒ m = 6

mx+2y=2 ......eq (1)
3x+y=1...........eq.(2)

mx+2y=2........eq (1)
6x+2y=2..........eq (2)×2
----------------
(m-6)x=0
----------------

m-6=0
m=6
