From Where Did 25000 Arrived?

Question:

DIRECTIONS : Answer the following questions based on the information given below.

Axiom, a computer manufacturer started to make a model called tech—1 from 1998. Since then, the company has been successful in selling all the models it manufactured that same year itself but due to a defect, 20% of the computers that it manufactured every year had to be discarded exactly two years afterwards. In 2003, it introduced a new model called tech—2, which was also a hit and the company was able to sell all the models of tech—2 it manufactured in an year, that year itself. Even though tech—2 was technologically advanced than tech—1, its failure rate was also high and exactly 30% of tech—2 models manufactured in any year had to be discarded after exactly two years of its manufacture. The following bar graph gives the number of models of tech—1 and tech—2 models in use in each of the years. It is also known that 5000 units of tech—1 were discarded in the year 2005.(In thousands)

How many units of tech-1 were manufactured in the year 2001?

Options:
A)

25,000

B)

30,000

C)

45,000

D)

20000

E)

Cannot be determined

Solution:

Ans: (c)

It is given that 5000 units of tech-1 were discarded in the year 2005. This means that 25000 units of tech - 1 were manufactured in the year 2003.

The number of actual additions is only 196 – 180 = 16,000, which means that 25,000 – 16,000 = 9,000 units of tech - 1 were discarded in the year 2003 or 45,000 units of tech- 1 were manufactured in the year 2001.
