both options A and B are same than whats the point of making option a right and option b not.

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the question, two sentences (I) and (II) are given. Each sentence has a blank in it. Five options are suggested. Out of these, only one fits at both the places in the context of each sentence. Mark that option as your answer.

I.The photograph awakens ______memories of happier days.

II.It is especially ______that he died on the day before the wedding.

Options:
A)

poignant

B) piquant
C) reminiscent
D) maudlin
E) pathetic
Solution:

Ans: (a) poignant

Poignant means evoking a keen sense of sadness or regret.

Its synonyms are touching, moving, sad, pitiful, piteous, pathetic, sorrowful, mournful, tearful, etc.

Option (b) Piquant means having a pleasantly sharp taste or appetizing flavour, so, its use would be out of context

Similarly Option (c) reminiscent which means tending to remind one of something, does not match with statement II.

Option (d) maudlin which means self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental also would be antithetical

Similarly, Option (e) Pathetic cannot be used in the first sentence as it cannot refer to the 'memories of happier days'.
