Roiled means

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In each question, there are three sentences. Each sentence has a pair of words that are italicized and highlighted. From the italicized and highlighted words, select the most appropriate word (a or b) to form correct sentences. These sentences are followed by options that indicate the words, which may be selected to complete the set of sentences correctly. From the options given choose the most appropriate one.

1. The jeweller was carefully examining the diamond under the loupe (a) / loop (b) when I passed his shop.

2. Burrnan was a blacksmith but adept at luting(a) / looting(b) many stringed instruments.

3. I was roiled(a) / rivaled (b) by Modis impatience.

Options:
A) bba
B) aba
C) abb
D) aaa
E) aab
Solution:

The word ‘loupe’ means magnifying glasses attached to the eyes and used by jewellers which is suitable here. ‘Loop’ means a shape made by a wire/string when it is doubled up on itself and this is not suitable here.

‘Luting’ means to seal, pack, coat or join something with lute or liquid clay and suits the sentence correctly. ‘Looting’ means ‘stealing I robbing’ which does not match the word ‘adept’.

‘Roiled’ means to get irritated and is suitable for this sentence. ‘Rivalled’ means to attempt to surpass and this is not suitable in the context.
