DIRECTIONS: Refer to the following information for the following questions.

One of the words listed below is my secret word.


AIM      DUE    MOD     OAT     TIE

With this list, if I were to tell you any one letter of my secret word, then you would be able to tell me the number of vowels in my secret word.

How many vowels are there in my secret word?

All the words except  MOD have 2 vowels each. 

We start from MOD. Note that all the letters of word MOD are common to one or the other word. For e.g. O is common to OAT. Whenever any of these letters i.e. M, O or D appear in my secret word we have two possible answers for total numbers of vowels. Now consider my secret word as AIM. When I call ‘A’ one can say for sure that there are 2 vowels because A is common to OAT that also has two vowels.

When I call ‘I’ one can say for sure that there are 2 vowels because ‘I’ is common to TIE that also has two vowels.

But when I call ‘M’ there are two possible answers AIM has 2 vowels but MOD has just one vowel. 

Therefore words where letter ‘M’ is appearing cannot be our secret code. The same is true for O and ‘D’ as well. Thus AIM, DUE, MOD and OAT are not possible. The only possible answer remaining is TIE. 

Check for TIE : when I call ‘T’ one can say for sure that there are 2 vowels because ‘T’ is common to OAT which also has 2 vowels.

When I call ‘I’ one can say for sure that there are 2 vowels because ‘I’ is common to AIM that also has 2 vowels. When I call ‘E’ one can say for sure that there are 2 vowels because ‘E’ is common to DUE that also has 2 vowels.

Hence the answer is (b)
