The part (a) also has issues, since it should be in 'had + 3rd form of verb' , i.e. 'had started'. Use of 'did' is incorrect here.

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following sentences some parts of it contain error and some may not. Mark the part of the sentence which has a flaw as answer.

(a) No sooner did the train start/ (b) when there was/ (c) a great rush/ (d) into my compartment./ (e) No error

Options:
A) (a)
B) (b)
C) (c)
D) (d)
E) (e)
Solution:

Sol: (b)

‘No sooner’ is followed by ‘than’ and not ‘when’.

Eg: No sooner had she read the telegram than she started crying.

  •       No sooner had I arrived at the station than the train came.
  •       No sooner had we heard the noise than we rushed to the spot.
  •       No sooner had she finished one project than she started working on the next.
  •        No sooner had the sun risen than the fog disappeared.

No sooner had I finished my studies than I got a good job.

  •       No sooner had I closed my eyes than I fell asleep.

Note that did is also possible in this structure.

  • Eg: No sooner did I arrive at the station than the train came.
  •       No sooner did we hear the noise than we rushed to the spot.
  •       No sooner did I put the phone down than it started ringing again.

No sooner did they meet than they fell in love with each other.
