From II we have possibility of two solutions

1) MTASR
2) RSATM

Hence II is not conclusive enough..

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In each of the following questions, a question is followed by information given in two statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statement(s) is necessary to answer the question?

Five letters – S, A, M, R and T – are arranged from left to right according to certain conditions. Which letter is placed second from the left?

I. A is placed to the immediate right of M. R is placed second to the left of T. There is only one letter between S and A.

II. T is a neighbour of M and A. Only one letter is placed between A and R. R is not placed at the left end.

Options:
A)

If statement I alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement II alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

B)

If statement II alone is sufficient to answer the question and statement I alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

C)

If the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

D)

If statements I and II together are not sufficient to answer the question and additional data specific to the problem is needed.

E)

If statements I and II together are sufficient to answer the question, but neither statement alone is sufficient.

Solution:

Ans: (c)

From I alone, M A R S T

A is placed second from the left.

∴ I alone is sufficient

From II alone M T A S R

T is placed second from the left.

∴ II alone is sufficient.

∴ Either I or II is sufficient.
