Solution and given answer contradicts. As Per solution, both the statements are required to answer the question. But correct option is marked otherwise

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In each of the following questions, a question is followed by information given in two statements. You have to study the question along with the statements and decide, the information given in which of the statements (s) is necessary to answer the question?

What was Raina’s average score in the 3 events in which he participated?

I. His highest score was 23.

II. In one event he scored \(\cfrac{5}{6}\)th his average score and in another event his score was 5 points more than his average score.

Options:
A)

If the question can be answered by using statement I alone but not by using statement II alone

B) If the question can be answered by using statement II alone but not by using statement I alone
C) If the question can be answered by using either of the statements alone
D) If the question can be answered by using both the statements together but not by either of the statements alone
E) If the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together
Solution:

Ans: (d) We know from statement 1, that Raina’s highest score was 23. But that does not get us an answer. Hence statement I alone is insufficient.

From statement II, as we don’t know the total score, we can not find the answer. Statement ii alone is not sufficient.

∴ We combine the two statements,

Let x be the average score.

His score in one event was 5 points more than average score. This may be 23 or less than 23. If it is less than 23,

The scores are 5/6 x, x + 5 and 23

5/6 x + x + 5 + 23 = 3x

⇒ 7/6 x = 28. ⇒ x = 24, which is not possible.

The score which is 5 more than the average is 23 and hence the average is 18. The scores in the 3 events are 15, 16 and 23.

∴ We can find Raina’s average score in the 3 events by combining the two statements.

Both the statements are required.
