It is given that, one of the neighbors of R is facing South.
So, here in solution, if T (one neighbor of R) is already facing South, then what is the reason behind "I" also facing South?

Question:

DIRECTIONS: Study the following information carefully to answer the given questions.

8 persons S, R, H, I, T, G, Q and F are sitting in a line, some are facing North some are facing South. All have different ages 14, 16, 17, 19, 23, 26, 28 and 31, but not in the same order. Not more than two persons are facing the same direction. S is second from any of the extreme ends. R is sitting third to the left from S. One of the immediate neighbors of R facing south. H do not sit at any of the extreme ends of the line. Immediate neighbors of I face north. Immediate neighbors of H faces south. F is third to the right of T.

Q is sitting immediate left of G. R is an immediate neighbor of I. H faces North. F sits immediate right of S. Immediate neighbors of S face opposite directions (i.e. if one neighbor faces North then the other neighbor faces south and Vice-Versa). The difference between the ages of the persons F–H, S–T, R–Q is less than 3. The difference between the ages of the persons S–H, F–T, R–I and Q–G is same. The age of R is exactly divisible by 13. H is the youngest.

According to the arrangement, how many people are facing North?

Options:
A)

One

B)

Three

C)

Two

D)

Five

E)

Four

Solution:

Ans: (e) S is second from any of the extreme ends. R is sitting third to the left from S. Thus two possibilities are there-

        Or

F sits immediate right of S. F is third to the right of T.R is an immediate neighbor of I. Immediate neighbors of I face North Thus R faces North.

Q is sitting immediate left of G thus G definitely sits extreme end of the line.

                              Or

H do not sit at any of the extreme ends of the line. H faces North. Immediate neighbors of H faces south.

Thus second possibility is correct.

Immediate neighbors of S face opposite directions, thus F faces South. One of the immediate neighbors of R facing south thus I faces South.

Different ages 14, 16, 17, 19, 23, 26, 28 and 31

The age of R is exactly divisible by 13, R = 26 and H is the youngest thus H = 14. The difference between the ages of the persons F – H, S – T, R – Q is less than 3.

Thus

F – H (16 – 14 = 2) F = 16, H = 14.

S – T (19 – 17 = 2) S = 19/17 T = 17/19

R – Q = (26 – 28) R = 26, Q = 28

The difference between the ages of the persons S – H, F – T, R – I and Q – G is same.

For Q – G, Either Q – G = 28 – 31 = 3 or 28 – 23 = 5

For (F – T) either 19 – 16= 3 or 17 – 16 = 1

Difference of 3 is possible thus

S = 14, T = 19, I = 23, G = 31

Final arrangement-
