according to me there are only two pairs... 98 and 53.

if my answer is wrong ..explain properly.

How many such pairs of the digits are there in the number 539816, each of which has as many digits between them in the numbers, as when the digits are arranged in descending order within the number?

Yes there are only two required pairs of digits viz. 98 and 65........not 53.....

in the number 986531, 98 and 65 are the pairs of the digits each of which has as many digits between them in the numbers.
