Question:

DIRECTIONS: Each of the sentences given below has two blanks. Select the set of words for the blanks which best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.

This boy is undoubtedly seen as a leader by his numerous _____ but unfortunately some of his teachers find him easily _______.

Options:
A) relatives, indolent
B) rogues, undisciplined
C) peers, distracted
D) brothers, dishonest
E) friends, humble
Solution:

Ans: (c)

The boy’s classmates or the students of the same age consider him a leader but his teachers find him inattentive in the class. The most meaningful pair is (c) “peers, distracted.”

The meaning of “peer” is “a person who is the same age or who has the same social status as you” and “distracted” means “unable to pay attention to somebody or something because you are worried or thinking about something else.”

Examples: She enjoys the respect of her peers;

Children are worried about failing in front of their peers;

Peer pressure is strong among young people;

The students were easily distracted during the class.

While the word “peers” is a plural noun, the word “distracted” is an adjective, not a verb.
