new price and new expenditure

Question:
The price of an item went up by 25% and a family decided to reduce its consumption so that the total expenditure would increase by only 8% as compared to the previous expenditure. If 25 kg of the item was consumed previously, then how many kg of the item should be consumed now?
Options:
A) 25 kg
B) 20 kg
C) 22.4 kg
D) 21.6 kg
E) None of these
Solution:

Ans: (d)

Let initial price be x

Let initial consumption be y.

∴ Expenditure = xy

New price = 1.25 x

New expenditure = 1.08 xy

∴ New consumption = \(\cfrac{1.08xy}{1.25x}\) = \(\cfrac{108}{125}\) y

y = initial consumption = 25 kg (given)

∴  New consumption = \(\cfrac{108}{125}\) × 25 = 21.6 kg
