how the 2 cases eliminated. and why U can't be placed at 1 n 2 case

Question:

DIRECTIONS: These questions are based on the following information.

Six persons P, Q, R, S, T, and U  are living in a seven-storeyed building but not necessarily in the same order.

Ground floor is considered the first floor and the floor above the ground floor is considered the second floor and so on.

One floor is vacant in the given building. Three floor are between R and T in which one floor is vacant and neither of them lives on the top floor nor on the bottom floor. S lives two floors above P whose floor is not below the vacant floor. U lives on an even-numbered floor but not below Q's floor. The number of persons living below U's floor is equal to the number of persons living above P's floor.

The vacant floor is above Q's floor but not adjacent to Q's floor. P does is not live in the first floor.

Who among the following lives on the fifth floor?

Options:
A)

Q

B)

S

C)

P

D)

U

E)

R

Solution:

Ans: (c)

It is given that Three floor are between R and T in which one floor is vacant and neither of them lives on the top floor nor on the bottom floor.

From the above condition, we get the following arrangement.

Floor

Person

7

-

6

R/T

5

-

4

-

3

-

2

T/R

1

-

U lives on a even-numbered floor and the number of persons living below U’s floor is equal to the number of persons living above P’s floor. So U must be on 4th floor. As S lives two floors above P and P does not live below the vacant floor, P lives on the fifth floor and S lives on the top-most floor. Thus, the third floor is vacant and Q lives on the first floor.

The final floor arrangement is as below.

U lives on a even-numbered floor and the number of persons living below U’s floor is equal to the number of persons living above P’s floor. We cannot place U and P in the first two cases. Thus, the two cases are eliminated. In the third case, U lives on the fourth floor. As S lives two floors above P and P does not live below the vacant floor, P lives on the fifth floor and S lives on the top-most floor. Thus, the third floor is vacant and Q lives on the first floor.
