could you please review the answer image as there two 14 km and it's not been shown in the image

Question:

DIRECTIONS :A pilot is given directions in a code language. The following are the codes for the directions:

1: South — east

2: North - west

3: West

4: South — west

5: North-east

6: East

7: North

8: South

E.g. Directions and distances are given to him as:

Directions: 5 3 2

Distance: 2 4 1

This means that he should cover 2 km in the north - east, then 4 km in the west and then finally 1 km in the north - west

Directions: 7 6 1 2 8 7

Distance: 4, 12, 14, 14, 2, 3

How far is the pilot from the starting point?

Options:
A) 13
B) 40
C) \(40\surd2\)
D) 35
E)

None of these

Solution:
Ans:(a)

Using the codes for the directions, the path of the pilot is as shown below:

Let the source and destination of the flight be A and B respectively.

Hence, the horizontal distance between A and B is 12 km and the vertical distance between these two points is 4-2 + 3 = 5km.

Hence, the distance can be calculated as follows:

= \(\surd12^2+5^2 =13 km\)

Hence, the correct answer is option 1.

Dear Student,
First code shows the directions of the pilot and second code shows the distance travelled by the pilot. A is the initial point and after that, the given code is being followed.
