Please explain in simpler form with a correct sentence

Question:

DIRECTIONS: Read each sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. Mark the part with the error as your answer. If there is no error, mark 'No Error' as your answer. (Ignore the errors of punctuation, if any)

(a) Francis Bacon spent the last five years /(b) of his life in the obscurity and peace of his)home, / (c) harassed by an unwanted poverty, /(d) and solaced by the active pursuit of philosophy. /(e) No error

Options:
A) a
B) b
C) c
D) d
E) e
Solution:
Ans: (d) d

There is an error in part (d). From the sentence it is clear that there is a contrast presented in the second part so the conjunction ‘and’ is incorrect and does not emphasize the shift in tone. So ‘but’ is to be used in place of ‘and’ and brings in a contrasting sense of positivity.
