is available in wood and in metal is right????

Question:
DIRECTIONS: Read each sentence to find out whether there is any grammatical error or idiomatic error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number of that part is the answer. If there is ‘No error’ the answer is (e). (Ignore errors of punctuation, if any)
(a) This item / (b) is available both in wood and in metal /(c) but I /(d) prefer the later. /(e) No error
Options:
A) a
B) b
C) c
D) d
E) e
Solution:
Ans: (d) prefer the later

'Later’ means happening after the expected or usual time. 'Latter’ denotes the second or the second mentioned thing which is to be used in this context Therefore the part that contains error is (d). The correction is …… but I prefer the latter.

It is in the sense that ... This item is available both in wood and in metal, but I prefer the latter.
The ambiguity was because of the lacking word 'both' . Now the sense is clear with the addition of
word 'both' in the sentence.
