Question:

DIRECTIONS: Rearrange the following six sentences A, B, C, D, E and F in the proper sequence to form a meaningful paragraph; then answer the questions given below.

(A) The citizens of this vast land spoke many different languages.

(B) There were divisions between high castes and low castes, between the majority Hindu community and Indians who practiced other faiths.

(C) It was also divided.

(D) How could they be made to live together in one nation-state?

(E) India’s population in 1947 was large, almost 345 million.

(F) They wore many different kinds of dress, ate different kinds of food and practiced different professions.

Which of the following will be the FIFTH sentence of the paragraph?

Options:
A) D
B) F
C) C
D) A
E) B
Solution:
Ans: (b) If we carefully observe all the six different parts of the given paragraph, we get to see that all the parts except part (E) either begin with a pronoun or have a pronoun in the middle. Therefore, none of these parts can be the FIRST sentence of the para. The passage begins with (E). Part (D) is a very strong statement in the from of a question. Without some justification or basis such a question can not be asked in the passage. When we look for such a justification we can see that parts (A), (B), (C), (F) are all eligible to the categorized under this head. Therefore, part (D) will be the last sentence. Now, we are left with four parts (A), (B), (C) and (F). Part (F) begins with ‘they’. So there must be some reference in a previous sentence to some people who can be referred to as ‘they’. Of the three remaining parts only part (A) contains the noun “citizens”. (B) and (C) do not have any suitable noun. Therefore we can conclude that AF’ is a definite pair. Now we are left with just two parts. (B) and (C), (C) makes a strong assertion and ‘D’ expands on the same assertion. Therefore ‘CB’ is another definite link. In part (C) there is pronoun ‘It’. This pronoun can only refer to India which we can find in part (E). Part (E) is already identified as the FIRST sentence of the passage. Therefore the correct sequence of the given sentences to form a meaningful passage will be “ECBAFD.
