they will meet at 5pm and overtake after 5pm

Question:
A thief steals a car at 2:30pm and drives it at 60 km/hr. The theft is discovered at 3pm. and the owner sets off in another car at 75km/hr to catch the thief. When will he overtake the thief?
Options:
A) 4:30pm
B) 4:45pm
C)  5pm
D) 5:15pm
E) None of these
Solution:

Relative speed of owner with respect to thief = 75 – 60 = 15 km/hr.

The distance covered by thief in 30 min.= S × T = 60 × \(\cfrac{1}{2}\) = 30 km.

∴ Owner will overtake thief in \(\cfrac{30}{15}\) =2 hrs.

∴ He will overtake thief at (3pm + 2hr.) = 5pm.
